How To Apply For Pan Card? Procedures

PAN card is one among the most essential documents for a citizen in India. It has a wide participation in your life. Let it be opening of a new account in a bank, filing income tax returns or transaction above Rs. 50,000, you will be asked for your PAN card number. So make sure that you have your own for easy management of your money. If you don’t have it yet, well no need to worry. We will get you through the steps involved in applying PAN card online in India.

Even before you login into the website to apply for PAN card, there are certain documents and certificates you need to keep ready. Make scanned copy of the documents required and save it in the system through which you are going to apply PAN card online. You will have to choose any one of the documents as proof for identity, address and age. Then you have to upload it during the process of online application.


Any one of these can be given as identity proof.

  1. Electoral photo identity card
  2. Driving license
  3. Aadhar card issued by the Unique Identification Authority
  4. Passport
  5. Ration card with photo of the applicant.
  6. Photo identity card issued by the Central Government or State government or Public sector undertaking.
  7. Arms license.
  8. Pensioner card containing the photo of the applicant
  9. Central government health service scheme card or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health scheme photo card.
  10. Certificate of identity in original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazette officer
  11. Bank certificate in original on letter head from the branch (along with the name and stamp of the issuing officer) containing attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant.


Any one of these can be submitted as proof of address.

  1. Electoral photo identity card
  2. Driving license
  3. Aadhar card issued by the Unique Identification Authority
  4. Passport
  5. Passport of the spouse
  6. Post office passbook having address of the applicant
  7. Latest property tax assessment order
  8. Domicile certificate issued by the Government
  9. Allotment letter of accommodation issued by Central or State Government not more than three yrs old
  10. Property registration
  11. Certificate of address in original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazette officer
  12. Employer certificate in original

The below documents can also be used if not older than three months.

  1. Electricity bill
  2. Landline or broadband connection bill
  3. Water bill
  4. Consumer gas connection card or book or piped gas bill
  5. Bank account statement
  6. Depository account statement
  7. Credit card statement


Any one of these can be given as proof of age

  1. Birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or any office authorized to issue Birth and Deaths by the Registrar of Birth and deaths Or the Indian consulate as defined in Clause (d) of sub-section (1) of section 2 of the citizenship Act, 1955
  2. Matriculation certificate
  3. Driving license
  4. Marriage certificate
  5. Passport
  6. Pension payment order
  7. Affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating the date of birth
  8. Domicile certificate issued by the Government

Apart from the above documents you will need two photographs taken in white background of size 3.5cm X 2.5cm


  • Go to the url
  • In the bottom you will find an option for individual in the Apply for a new PAN card drop down menu. Select it
  • Start filling form now. For clarifications you can visit the guidelines page
  • The first field AO code can be filled in using the guidelines page
  • Now start filling other fields like Name, gender, Date of birth and others which won’t be so difficult to fill in.
  • Pay attention while uploading the documents in point 15 in the form.
  • After filling the details go through it again to ensure all the details are correct.
  • After that choose one of the payment options like through demand draft, debit/credit card, cheque or internet banking mentioned in the end of the form. The fee is Rs.105 for within India and Rs. 971 for outside India along with transaction charges.
  • Once you are done with the payment press the “submit”
  • Once again check the details. Enter the captcha code. Press the “confirm”
  • After you confirm you will get an acknowledgement. It will have a unique 15-digit acknowledgement number.
  • Save and print this acknowledgement
  • Affix the photographs in the given space
  • You should leave your signature and thumb impression only inside the box.
  • The photograph in the right side should not have any signature on it
  • The photograph should be clear and of good quality if not the application will be rejected
  • The signature or the left hand thumb impression should be on the left side photograph
  • It should be in such a way that part of the signature should be on the photograph as well as the acknowledgement.
  • Now you can put the acknowledgement form inside an envelope. If you are to choose offline payments attach your cheque/DD. Also attach the supporting proof documents as mentioned earlier.
  • Super scribe the envelope with ‘Application for pan- (15 digit acknowledgement number)’
  • Send the envelope to the NSDL in the following address

  • This acknowledgement should reach the office within 15 days from the date of online submission along with the required proof.
