Protestation raised in Tuticorin to close the Sterlite factory. Due to this, the work began today for shutting down of Sterlite factory. Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board issued order last night to shut down the Sterlite Factory. The District Collector of Tutuicorin and the officials of Sterlite confirmed the shut down. The closing formalities begin following the order from the Government.
The officials stated that about 24 hours is needed to close the Sterlite Factory in a safe manner. The Tamilnadu Electricity Board has been engaged in the work to disconnect electricity supply to the factory. On 23rd of this month in Tuticorin, gas leakage occurred from the Factory. This led to respiratory failure and eye irritation in the people around the Factory.
Therefore protestation has been raised to close the factory. The residential people around the factory complained the District collector regarding this. The political parties also gave pressure to close the factory. The sulphur di oxide released from the factory caused impact on the people residing over there and therefore action has been taken to close the Factory.
