Twenty-Three Dead, Over 30 Injured in Mumbai Stampede

Mumbai: At least twenty-three people were killed and more than 30 were severely injured on Friday in a stampede at the foot overbridge at Mumbai’s Elphinstone road station.

According to reports, the incident took place at around 10:30 am near a ticket window when a crowd tried to leave a narrow foot over-bridge connecting two train stations after heavy rain.

Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said, “Many were waiting in the rain. There were too many people in a cramped space. When people were trying to rush to their trains, the stampede happened.”

As per sources, police are investigating reports that a short-circuit with a loud sound near the bridge led to panic and people started running.

The rescue operation is currently underway. The injured people are being rushed to nearby hospitals and a team of doctors have also reached the spot.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that an inquiry will be conducted by the Maharashtra government. He also announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the kins of the deceased.

The chief minister said that all medical expenses of the injured will be borne by the Maharashtra government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the deaths.
