Chennai: A 46-year-old woman died at a hospital in Chennai on Saturday after undergoing a weight loss surgery.
Sources say that Valarmathi, a native of Keezhnaachipatti village in Tiruvannamalai district, was weighing over 160 kilos and she was receiving treatment for obesity at a private hospital in Chennai. After the most recent weight loss surgery, the woman passed away.
As per sources, Valarmathi along with her three children underwent the surgery but she lost her life in this process. Her son Satish Kumar was 130 kg and daughters Saranya and Sangeeta close to 122 kg and 97 kg respectively.
“We came for obesity treatment for my wife. Doctors said that they will do weight loss surgery for four in our family. They said that we do not have to bear all the costs and just have to pose for photographs before and after the surgery,” said Alagesan, Valarmathi’s husband.
According to sources, her family said that they have spent around 2 lakh on medicines and other consultations. The woman was in the hospital for almost a month and after her first surgery, the doctors had to conduct nine more surgeries.
The woman’s family members have filed a police complaint and alleged that it is a case of medical negligence.
A case has been registered under section 174 of CrPC (suspicious death). The body was moved to the Government hospital for autopsy. Following the woman’s death, the state government has announced that at two-member team has been formed by Director of Medical Services, in order to investigate the matter.
